Good security will help protect against crime and other security threats.

  1. Risk assessment:  What kind of threats are you facing?
  1. Building, expanding or acquiring new premises:  Plan your security measures from the outset.
  1. Is security awareness part of your organisation’s culture?  Regular briefings for staff, notices up-to-date.  Revise emergency and evacuation procedures.
  1. Good housekeeping :  Keep public areas tidy and well lit.   Remove any unnecessary furniture;  keep garden areas free from dense shrubbery.
  1. Access points:  Keep them to a minimum.  Consider passes for staff.  Revise procedures for booking in visitors and contractors.   Search of bags.  Vehicle access and parking arrangements.  Barrier systems and arranging your car park so that unauthorised vehicles are denied access.
  1. Physical measures:  Locks on windows and doors, CCTV, alarms, lighting.  Ensure they are working to specification and regularly checked.
  1. Recruiting staff:  Hiring contractors or outsourcing, ensure that they are who they say they are by checking documentation.   Follow up and visit references.
